In Case You Were Wondering…

by Brando on April 12, 2010

…who the woman in my header image is, she’s Josephine Baker — Dancer, singer, actress, and all-around entertainer most popular in France in the 20s and 30s. One of the most electrifying women in history and one of my all-time idols. She was smart, funny, charming, and unapologetically sexy. To put it simply, if I were given the chance to be a woman, I’d want to be her.

But don’t worry, I quite like being a boy.

(and I’d still look just as good in the banana skirt.)

Oh, and this short clip of her dancing sums up pretty much every aspect of my personality. Cheers.

Not to be a total snob, but, no I wasn't wondering :) I'm well aware of who josephine baker was (tsk tsk to everyone who didn't recognizer her!), and have admired her beauty and class and style since I was a little girl and was first introduced to her through a set of Great Ladies of the 20th Century paper dolls (the real paper kind that you punch out of its perforated page and then dress in paper clothes by folding the little flaps around the shoulders and ankles – which makes me sound so old! even though it was barely the early 90s!). She had the most beautiful gowns in the whole book of paper dolls! But I'd never seen a video of her. I have to say, it's decidedly more forward than I would have imagined for that time! From her 1920s photographs I always pictured her more of a dreamy, elegant, swooning Billie Holiday type!
